2. 줄거리

1943년, 독일 아우슈비츠 강제 수용소 소장 루돌프 횣스는 아내 헤트비히와 다섯 자녀와 함께 수용소 바로 옆의 한적한 집에서 생활한다. 횣스는 아이들과 수영하고 낚시를 즐기고, 헤트비히는 정원을 가꾸며 시간을 보낸다. 비유대인 수감자들이 잡일을 처리하고, 살해된 유대인들의 소유물은 가족에게 주어진다. 정원 담장 너머에서는 총성, 비명, 기차 소리, 그리고 소각로 소리가 종종 들린다.

원래 횓의 집은 전쟁 후 80년 동안 개인 주택으로 사용되어 노후화되었기 때문에 촬영 장소로 적합하지 않았다.[11] 프로덕션 디자이너 크리스 오디는 몇 백 야드 떨어진, 전쟁 이후에 지어졌지만 비슷한 건축 양식을 가진 버려진 건물을 선택했다.[15] 그는 몇 달 동안 그 집을 횓의 저택과 똑같이 개조했고, 촬영 시작 시점에 꽃이 만발하도록 2021년 4월에 정원 심기를 시작했다.[11] 수용소 건물들은 심하게 노후되어 컴퓨터 생성 그래픽스를 사용하여 재현했다.[26]

Jonathan Glazer영어 감독은 마틴 에이미스의 소설 《관심 영역》을 읽고 영화 제작에 대한 영감을 얻었다.[162][163] 그는 이 소설의 판권을 획득했다. 소설의 두 주인공은 아우슈비츠 강제 수용소에서 가장 오래 복무한 소장인 루돌프 회스와 그의 아내 헤드비히를 모델로 했다. 글레이저는 역사적 인물을 사용하기로 결정하고 회스 부부에 대한 2년간의 광범위한 조사를 실시했다.[164]

5. 3. 이스라엘-하마스 전쟁과의 연관성

영화 《존 오브 인터레스트》의 개봉은 현재 진행 중인 이스라엘-하마스 전쟁과 시기가 겹쳤다.[90][91] 제96회 아카데미 시상식에서 조나단 글레이저 감독은 수상 소감에서 이 영화가 비인간화가 최악의 상황으로 치닫는 모습을 보여준다고 말했다. 그는 "우리는 지금 유대인이라는 정체성과 홀로코스트가 너무나 많은 무고한 사람들에게 갈등을 초래한 점령에 의해 악용되는 것을 반박하는 사람들로서 여기에 서 있습니다."라고 밝혔다. 글레이저 감독은 유대인으로서 "10월 7일 이스라엘에서 발생한 피해자들"과 "가자에 대한 현재의 공격" 모두 비인간화라고 비판했다.[48][49]

글레이저의 발언은 언론에서 큰 논란을 일으켰다. 특히 그의 발언을 축약하여 널리 퍼뜨린 인용문 때문에 글레이저가 단순히 자신의 유대인 정체성을 부정한 것이 아니라, 해당 정체성이 "점령에 의해 악용되는 것"을 부정한 것으로 오해하게 만들면서 논란은 더욱 커졌다.[50]

2024년 3월 18일, 에이미 파스칼, 제니퍼 제이슨 리, 줄리아나 마굴리스, 데브라 메싱, 엘리 로스, 마이클 라파포트를 포함한 1,000명 이상의 "유대인 창작자, 임원 및 할리우드 전문가"가 글레이저의 연설을 유대인 학살 음모론으로 비난하는 공개 서한에 서명했다.[52] 4월 5일에는 글레이저를 옹호하는 두 번째 공개 서한에 영화 업계의 150명 이상의 유대인 창작자들이 서명했다. 조엘 코언, 토드 헤인즈, 호아킨 피닉스, 엘리엇 굴드, 월리스 쇼를 포함하여 450명 이상의 유대인 창작자가 서명했으며, 영화의 작곡가인 미카 레비도 서명했다.[53] 극작가 토니 커쉬너와 조이 카잔은 연설을 초기에 지지한 사람들 중 하나였다.[54][55][56]
